‘Role of Media in Intellectual Growth of the Nation’

Development policies should be made according to nation’s nature: Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki

A lecture on ‘Role of Media in Intellectual Growth of the Nation’ was organised by Journalism University to mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Makhanlal Chaturvedi

 Bhopal: Every nation has its own nature and behaviour. And development could b achieved only when the policies are made according to the nature otherwise there will be deformation. The first intellectual development of the human beings occur at the home and then in the society.  On January 30, media has to play a great role in the intellectual growth of the human beings. Therefore, media should first understand the cultural India then transfer the knowledge to the people. These views were expressed by the Governor of Haryana, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki while addressing a function organised to mark the death anniversaries of Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi and one of the greatest poet, journalist and freedom fighters of the country Makhanlal Chaturvedi. The function was organised on the subject, ‘Role of Media in Intellectual Growth of the Nation’ by Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication wherein Prof. Solanki was present as Chief Guest. Member of the freshly-constituted Central Film Censor Board of India and senior journalist, Ramesh Patange was also present as the keynote speakers on the occasion.

Prof. Solanki, in his address, further said that India is a nation built by the sages and saints. He said that the lives of Mahatma Gandhi and Makhanlal Chaturvedi are the reflection of the India’s culture and philosophy and therefore, it is not only India that derives inspiration from them but the entire world. He said that American President Barack Obama always quotes Mahatma Gandhi’s name in his addresses all over the world. While underlining the role of journalism in shaping India’s future, Haryana Governor said that journalists would have to take lessons from the practices and values of Makhanlal Chaturvedi. He said that January 30 is a pious day for the country who gave to great sons to India who devoted a major part of their lives to journalism and cultivated a seed of development and enlightenment in the society through it.

Senior journalist and Member of Central Film Censor Board, Ramesh Patange while addressing the students, said four kinds of independence are important for a society for its inclusive growth: political, social, economic and intellectual. He said that political freedom has been achieved and the nation is in the process of achieving social and economic freedom and would be achieved in the days to come. But the struggle for intellectual freedom is the toughest and the most important one. Media could play a vital role in it and therefore, it should rethink how this freedom could be achieved.      

While presiding over the function, vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Brij Kishore Kuthiala said that besides, the education imparted at schools, colleges and universities, media too plays a key role in giving an intellect to the society. It is the responsibility of the media to take the intellectual level of the society to the zenith. Prof. Kuthiala further said, “Realizing their responsibilities, media-persons should disseminate information to the society only after a thorough analysis according to their intellectual abilities.” He also exhorted the student to take into account the points brought to the fore during the function and think and imbibe them to shape themselves into responsible and competent journalists.

Earlier, the function began with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the guests and recitation of Saraswati Vandana and Makhanlal Chaturvedi’s poems by students. The guests also paid tribute to Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi and Makhanlal Chaturvedi by garlanding their portraits.

The function was coordinated by the head of Mass Communication Department, Sanjay Dwivedi. Among those present on the occasion were many eminent citizens from the city, heads of different departments of the Journalism University, faculty members, officers, employees and large number of students.
