मुंबई प्रेस क्लब की विज्ञप्ति -

CANDLE LIGHT VIGIL TODAY AT 8 PM SEEKING JUSTICE FOR OUR THREE JOURNALIST’S COLLEAGUES

Mumbai Press Club, in alliance with Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, Bombay News Photographers Association and TV Journalists Association, will hold a candle light vigil on Friday July 10 at 8 pm seeking justice for our three journalist’s colleagues – Akshay Singh, Jagendra Singh and Sandeep Kothari – who died recently in the line of duty. Jagendra and Sandeep Kothari were brutally murdered, while Akshay Singh died in suspicious circumstances when probing the Vypam scam.

We will all meet  at the gates of the Press Club and Patrakar Sangh on 10th July, Friday, at 8.00 PM sharp, and march to Mahapalika Marg gate where will hold a candle light vigil along with the portraits of the slain journalists.

Akshay Singh, 38, a special correspondent with Aaj Tak, died even as he was interviewing some persons in respect of the Vypam scam at Ujjain, in Madhya Pradesh. Sandeep Kothari, a Madhya Pradesh-based journalist, was burnt to death for exposing the sand mafia. Kothari, 40, hailed from Balaghat district and was writing for several Jabalpur-based newspapers as a tehsil correspondent. The burnt body of Sandeep Kothari, who was abducted from Katangi tehsil in Balaghat district two days back, was found lying near railway tracks at Sindi town in Wardha district of Vidarbha region.

Jagendra Singh, a freelance journalist was brutally murdered by members of the UP police, who acted at the behest of Uttar Pradesh’s minister for backward Classes Welfare, Ram Murti Verma. Jagendra Singh was mercilessly set afire after kerosene was poured on him by the goons, and he died a horrific death on 8 June.

If this is how the Fourth Estate is going to be treated by the powers that be, while the government looks the other way, it is indeed a black hour for Indian democracy.

All members are requested to attend the candle light vigil

Looking forward to your support for strengthening journalist rights and unity!
